Work by local artist Jane Filer will greet arriving international passengers
RDU Airport, NC – On Thurs. Feb. 10, Triangle Area Sister Cities (TASC) will dedicate Friendly Folks, a mural by local artist Jane Filer, in Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s Terminal 2. The piece will be located in the international arrivals bag claim area.
Triangle Area Sister Cities commissioned the mural to celebrate the Research Triangle Region’s relationship with 13 international cities. The theme of the painting is Sister Cities International’s slogan “World Peace: One Friend, One Community at a Time.”
“The goal for the project was to illustrate to the traveling public the increasingly global role and responsibility of the people living in the Triangle area of North Carolina,” said Ronnie Lilley, project manager for TASC. “We also want to show how the TASC organizations work throughout the year as citizen ambassadors to promote international understanding and peace.”
“Art enhances our travelers’ experience, and we are pleased to feature the work of Jane Filer,” said Teresa Damiano, RDU’s director of marketing. “We thank the Triangle Area Sister Cities for this gift to our customers.”
The painting extends 45 ft. and depicts a row of happy figures in vivid colors which go from bright yellows to shades of green and blue. Birds and flowers representative of North Carolina will be scattered throughout the piece, while buildings representing various cultures appear behind the figures.
Filer’s work is featured in corporate, commercial and private sectors across the United States, Europe and Asia.
About the Project
In 2008 TASC, which represents the collective efforts of Cary, Durham, Raleigh and Southern Pines Sister Cities Associations, formed the TASC RDU Airport Art Project (TRAAP). The objective of the project was to commission a work by a local artist to promote the sister cities mission.
Nineteen jurors formed the art selection committee, which included representatives from the local Sister Cities organizations, art professionals, members of the business community and local residents.
