Avelo Airlines will launch two international routes from RDU in February with nonstop service to Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Montego Bay and Punta Cana will be new destinations for RDU, increasing the number of international destinations the airport serves to 14.
“We are thrilled to add new island getaways to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic to our international offerings,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “It has been exciting to watch Avelo grow at RDU, from starting with one route to opening a base and now adding international service. We appreciate their commitment to the Research Triangle market and look forward to continuing our strong partnership.”
Both new Avelo routes will launch in February and will fly on Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-November through September. Avelo began service at RDU in 2022 with a single route and opened a base at the airport the following year. The airline now serves five domestic destinations from RDU and has two Boeing Next-Generation 737s and nearly 100 employees stationed at the airport.
Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “Our Triangle-area Customers tell us they have loved flying Avelo since we took flight at RDU in 2022. The addition of these two popular international routes exemplifies the momentum and growth we have experienced at RDU. We appreciate the hundreds of thousands of Triangle-area Customers who have entrusted Avelo with their air travel. Their business is validation of the choice, affordability and industry-leading reliability Avelo offers RDU-area travelers.”
Including Avelo, seven airlines launched or announced new international service at RDU in 2024, including Aeromexico to Mexico City; Air Canada to Vancouver; BermudAir to Bermuda; Copa Airlines to Panama City; Lufthansa to Frankfurt, Germany; and WestJet to Calgary, Canada.
