RDU Weathers Winter Storm

RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham Airport Authorities report that flight schedules are beginning to return to normal today, following Thursday’s 11-inch snowfall that resulted in the cancellation of approximately 15% of RDU’s daily scheduled flights.

The winter storm that moved through the area had no major impact on airfield operations. RDU remained open throughout the storm as a result of a 24-hour snow removal operation that began at noon on Wednesday. Snow, slush and ice removal is expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Flight cancellations and delays are expected to lessen during the next 24 to 48 hours as airlines work to reschedule operations. Travelers however, should check with airlines for specific flight information.

Flight tracking services, airline reservation numbers and links to airline websites can be found here on this site. Via the Internet, passengers can check flight information and buy tickets or they can work with travel agents and airline ticket agents at the airport to make travel arrangements.

During a snowstorm, the airport adheres to a snow and ice control plan containing detailed regulations for how airports handle snow, ice and slush. The plan is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Airports are responsible for maintaining clear airport roadways, runways and taxiways while airlines are responsible for clearing snow and ice from their aircraft gate ramp areas.

During a snowstorm flights may be delayed or cancelled for many reasons even if there are no operating problems at the traveler’s home-base airport. Some of these reasons include operating conditions at other airports, system wide flight rescheduling and other airline operating considerations.

The airport and its airline business partners appreciate your support and patience as we work to serve you safely and efficiently during winter weather conditions.
