RDU Seeks Compromise on Perimeter Security Fencing

Airport to Continue Productive Discussions on Fence Design, Mountain Biking Lease

As RDU works to enhance airport security and keep trespassers off airport property, we understand that the issue of building perimeter fencing is extremely important to members of the community who enjoy using Umstead State Park. RDU recently released designs for a proposed perimeter fence around the entire perimeter of the airport’s property, including along the border with Umstead.

The recent attention surrounding the fencing issue has brought interested parties to the table to discuss a compromise. RDU recently had a very productive conversation with N.C. State Parks system officials about finding a solution that protects airport land while maintaining access to Umstead’s popular multi-use trail and addressing visual concerns.

Our goal is to find a compromise that allows the airport to secure its property while minimizing the impacts to Umstead State Park and their concerns. -Crystal Feldman, Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority

As a part of that compromise, RDU is also seeking a third party to lease 151 acres of land for mountain biking – a proposal originally included in RDU’s Vision 2040 master plan. In the meantime, RDU will focus its attention on the Vision 2040 construction that will allow us to grow responsibly, recruit new airlines and non-stop destinations and provide you with a world-class travel experience.
