RDU Prepares for Winter Storm

RDU Airport, NC – Crews at Raleigh-Durham International Airport today began getting ready for the winter storm expected to arrive in the region tomorrow evening. Earlier today, RDU maintenance crews began preparing snow removal equipment. Crews from the airport’s maintenance and operations departments are prepared to begin treating runways, taxiways and roadways as conditions warrant.

In anticipation of the storm, JetBlue has announced that it has canceled all flights arriving and departing RDU on Saturday, January 30. The airline expects to resume operations on Sunday.

Other cancellations are expected. During inclement weather events, each airline determines if it will cancel or delay flights.

Passengers with travel plans over the next several days are advised to contact their airline to check the status of their flight. Links to airline Web sites, airline customer service phone numbers and flight status information can be found at www.rdu.com.

Throughout the day tomorrow, RDU will monitor its runway surface temperatures and begin treating runways once precipitation begins to fall. Per FAA regulations, crews begin snow removal operations when one-half inch of wet snow or two inches of dry snow has accumulated. Crews, who will be at the airport 24 hours a day throughout the weather event, will also treat airport roadways, parking facilities and sidewalks.

RDU follows an FAA-approved snow and ice control plan.
