RDU Airport, NC – Members of the RDU Airport Authority held a groundbreaking event today to signal the start of the general contractor portion of the $430 million redevelopment of Terminal C.
Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta was awarded the general contract for $257.6 million. Their work will begin this spring on the new north concourse and processor building.
After acquiring the lease on Terminal C from American Airlines in 2002, the Authority began plans to transform the one-time airline hub facility into a modern, multiple-airline terminal.
Initially, the Authority developed plans to construct a new terminal where Terminal A is currently located. After acquiring the lease on Terminal C, however, the Authority realized it could create a new terminal with far less customer inconvenience and at less cost by expanding and redeveloping Terminal C.
Today’s groundbreaking celebrates not only the start of the general construction phase of the project, but also recognizes the 20th anniversary of the opening of the 10,000-foot runway adjacent to Terminal C.
The runway marked the beginning of the airport’s long-term development plans for the west side of the airfield. Today that original development plan becomes fully realized as RDU redevelops Terminal C.
