RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham International Airport experienced a sanitary sewer overflow from pump station #1, located on the north side of Aviation Parkway, of an estimated 13,000 to 16,000 gallons. The overflow began on Friday, October 11 at 9:30 a.m. and lasted for approximately 3 hours. The untreated wastewater entered Brier Creek Reservoir, which is located on Airport property and a tributary of Crabtree Creek. The overflow was a result of heavy rainfall, which diluted the sewage thereby reducing the negative impacts on the environment. Nearly six inches of rain was recorded at RDU on the day of the overflow. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is investigating the collection system to reduce future rainfall infiltration.
The North Carolina Department of the Environment and Natural Resources was notified of the overflow within 24 hours. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.C.
