July Passenger Volume Reaches All-Time High at RDU

Airport Welcomed Almost 1.4 Million Flyers Last Month:

RDU set a new all-time high for monthly passenger volume in July, with 1,389,232 total passengers flying through the airport. Traffic was up 3 percent over last month, 25.6 percent above the same month last year and was 2 percent higher than July 2019.

“We are grateful for the record-breaking number of guests who chose RDU for their travel needs,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “This growth underscores our urgency in expanding airport facilities and new offerings to meet regional demand for air service.”

Vision 2040: As the Airport Authority advances several projects associated with its Vision 2040 master plan, a new video unveils what the future state of RDU might look like. The video, now available on RDU’s YouTube channel, showcases marquee projects — including the replacement of primary runway 5L-23R, expansion of Park Economy 3 and further development of airport terminals to add gates and amenities. You can find the video here.

Vision 2040 is a long-range roadmap for the Authority to follow when making decisions about major campus construction projects. The master plan addresses improvements to the airfield, terminals, ground transportation and general aviation. The plan is based on projected passenger volume and the ability of RDU’s facilities to handle current and future demand.

More Parking: RDU will add 1,000 parking spaces on campus when it reopens ParkRDU Express this fall. Express offers trunk-to-terminal service, with luggage taken from the guest’s car and placed on a shuttle bus before they are driven directly to their terminal. The reopening of Express will provide airport guests with more parking choices in addition to the deck and economy lots. Guests will be able to book parking in Express online ahead of their trip. The Express lot is located on International Drive near Park Economy 4.

Cantina Grill Opens: Airport diners have a new option in Terminal 2, with Cantina Grill recently opening on C Concourse at Gate C17. Cantina Grill features local craft beer from Cary-based Bond Brothers Beer Company and a collection of wines, as well as a variety of breakfast options, sandwiches, salads and snack boxes all day for flyers to enjoy. There is also a unique menu item on draft – Bond Brothers created a specially crafted Session IPA called the “No Turbulence IPA” to serve to RDU travelers.
