Airline Launches Six New Direct Flights, Creates at Least 50 Jobs
Avelo Airlines is launching six direct flights from RDU this month and creating at least 50 jobs in the Research Triangle region. The new routes will connect travelers with destinations across Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Palm Beach, Sarasota and Tampa. Avelo will also strengthen its commitment to the local market by opening a base at RDU. The airline launched its inaugural flight from RDU in 2022 and continues to add new destinations.
“Avelo’s commitment to RDU and the Research Triangle extends beyond adding destinations to creating jobs in our community,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We appreciate their investment in our region look forward to a long and successful partnership.”
Avelo will initially position one Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737 at RDU and plans to add a second 737 in the first half of 2023. The airline anticipates creating direct and indirect aviation-related jobs over the next 12 months to support the base.
Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said, “Since taking flight at RDU last May, we have been very encouraged by the positive response Avelo has received from Raleigh, Durham and the surrounding areas. The opening of our fifth base at RDU marks an important milestone for Avelo and access for The Triangle Region to six new nonstop Florida routes. In addition to bringing more affordable and reliable air service to RDU, the relocation of our gates to Terminal 1 will make traveling with Avelo a substantially more convenient and relaxing experience whether you are departing or arriving RDU. Lastly, Avelo’s new base represents a meaningful investment in this growing and vibrant community as we add dozens of local residents to our Crew. The inauguration of our new base and service here is just the beginning.”
Avelo began nonstop service from RDU in May 2022 to Tweed-New Haven airport in Connecticut, a new destination at RDU. Fort Myers, Palm Beach and Sarasota are also new nonstop destinations and will give regional travelers even greater access to locales in the Sunshine State.
