America West Airlines Announces RDU Service

RDU Airport, NC  At a press conference this morning, America West Airlines announced that it would begin service between RDU and its main hub in Phoenix beginning on October 28.

The Phoenix-based airlines is the nation’s ninth largest and will begin two departures from RDU to Phoenix on Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. These 124 and 150 seat aircraft, respectively, will allow RDU customers to connect to over 40 destinations through their Phoenix hub.

“The addition of America West gives us an increased competitive advantage over other airports,” stated Ken Gibbs, Chairman of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “It expands the customers ability to have several choices when flying into or out of RDU. We are excited to welcome America West as RDU’s 13th major air carrier.”

America West will be operating from Terminal A and will use gate A14. They will gain the space that TWA currently occupies. As a result of the acquisition of TWA by American Airlines, TWA will relocate to Terminal C this Summer. RDU is the largest domestic market previously not served by America West.

Annual passenger traffic between RDU and Phoenix currently numbers 91,000. The flight schedule is designed to accommodate business travelers. The scheduled flights are:
