The first nonstop flight from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) arrived Monday, opening direct access between the Research Triangle region and the capitol of Mexico for the first time.
“The launch of Mexico City service connects the Raleigh-Durham market with a valuable business hub, vibrant leisure destination and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “Mexico City is a record 10th international destination at RDU and provides more travel opportunities to cities outside the U.S. than ever before.”
Mexico City joins Cancun as the second nonstop route to Mexico from RDU. It is also the airport’s tenth international destination – a record for RDU. Aeromexico will operate the flights daily on a 99-seat Embraer E-190 as part of its partnership with Delta Air Lines.
“For Aeromexico and our partner Delta Air Lines, the commitment to reinforce the connectivity network between the United States and Mexico City is crucial,” stated Jose Zapata, vice president of sales for the United States, Canada, and Latin America. “That’s why today we begin our direct flight between Mexico City and Raleigh-Durham, a key region for Mexico in the business, agricultural, automotive sectors, and with significant universities.”
RDU was the fastest-growing Top 50 airport in the country in 2023 and set passenger traffic records in 2024 for the busiest single day and busiest month. RDU has doubled the number of international cities it serves since 2019.
