First annual report highlights the Airport Authority’s efforts to integrate sustainability into infrastructure development and business operations
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority published its first Sustainability Program Annual Report today. The Fiscal Year 2023/2024 report highlights the Authority’s efforts to integrate sustainable practices into planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance and business processes at RDU.
While the Authority has long incorporated sustainable practices into its work, the RDU Sustainability Program was officially initiated in the spring of 2023 following the adoption of a Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Management Plan.
Through the policy and plan, the Authority uses a balanced approach to sustainability by considering the Federal Aviation Administration’s four pillars of sustainability in decision-making processes: economic viability, operational efficiency, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
Here are a few examples of sustainability actions taken at RDU in Fiscal Year 2023/2024:
- Hiring a dedicated energy manager to help reduce energy consumption in Authority-controlled facilities
- Completing a vulnerability assessment and risk evaluation for the Park Economy 3 expansion project
- Reusing construction materials to divert waste from landfills and reduce costs
- Engaging with local government agency stakeholders about sustainability efforts
The Airport Authority is committed to continuous improvement at RDU as we grow to meet the air service needs and wants of our community. To learn more about our sustainability efforts and see the full Sustainability Program Annual Report, visit www.rdu.com/sustainability.
