RDU to Implement New No Smoking Policy on January

RDU Airport, NC – On January 1, 2008, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority will expand its no smoking policy. Smoking inside airport terminals and all other Airport Authority-owned buildings will be prohibited.

The no smoking boundary will extend to outdoor areas surrounding airport facilities. Smoking will be prohibited within 20 feet of airport terminal doorways and within 50 feet of all other Authority-owned buildings. The ban also applies to airport parking structures, observation areas and bus shelters.

“One of the more frequent requests we receive from our customers is for a completely smoke-free environment,” said Jane Martin, RDU customer relations manager. “By prohibiting smoking inside the terminals and away from entrances, RDU will provide customers a healthier travel environment.”

The Airport Authority approved the new policy at its September 2007 meeting. The move followed legislation enacted by the N.C. General Assembly last summer.

Designated, outdoor smoking areas will be clearly marked.

The Airport Authority will launch an airport-wide campaign to inform travelers and employees about the new policy.
