National Guard to Reinforce Security at RDU

RDU Airport, NC – At the direction of Gov. Mike Easley, select members of the National Guard will report to RDU Airport Friday, October 5, to begin RDU security training and orientation. After training, the Guard will maintain a highly visible presence at the airport’s two terminals and three security checkpoints.

“Our passengers’ safety and confidence in air travel is our top priority,” said John Brantley, airport director. “The Guard’s presence will reassure people that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure they reach their destinations safely.”

The Guard will operate under the direction of RDU management. “We’ve requested people who have aviation/airport knowledge or a law enforcement background,” Brantley said.

The Guard’s assignment will last four to six months, and RDU has requested that some Guard members be allowed to help at curbside and with inspecting vehicles going into the parking decks closest to Terminal C. The airport is awaiting final approval for these extra duties.

President Bush mandated that the National Guard begin assisting airport security efforts after the terrorist attacks on September 11.
