TSA Introduces Security Checkpoint Innovations

Experienced and first time travelers at RDU now have a security lane designed specifically for them under the Transportation Security Administration’s new select security checkpoint lane program.

Currently being piloted in Terminal C, passengers are directed to lanes based on their travel needs and knowledge. The lanes are marked with signs for: Expert, the business traveler who flies several times a month; Casual, passengers who travel less frequently, but are familiar with the security process; and Family/Special Assistance, passengers traveling with small children or strollers, elderly passengers and passengers who may need special assistance.

new TSA Program.

The program is also known as the “Diamond Lane” because it was first tested in Salt Lake City. The term refers to the signs used in skiing to denote skill levels suggested for specific ski runs.

By giving families more time to prepare for screening in the “beginner” lanes, TSA officers are discovering a decrease in the number of prohibited items confiscated during the screening process. The TSA, working closely with the Airport Authority, plans to expand the program to Terminal A as space becomes available.
