Terminal 2 General Contractor Builds Strong Foundation

An occasional series of stories in Update will highlight contractors involved in the Terminal 2 project. In this issue we profile the general contractor, Archer Western Contractors.

A fourth generation family-owned construction business, The Walsh Group is the parent company of Archer Western Contractors, the general contractor for Terminal 2. The Walsh Group has practiced general building construction since 1898 and has a reputation for quality and safety. The construction of Terminal 2 is just one of several projects the company has worked on for the Airport Authority.

Work on the development of the new $258 million terminal began in April 2006.

opens this fall, it will feature

A general construction services contract for Terminal 2 began in March 2005 as an early foundations package. Construction of the new $570 million terminal began in April 2006.

Since receiving this contract, Archer Western has been awarded three additional associated projects. The Federal Inspections Services Fit Out, valued at approximately $7.5 million, includes the build out of shell space in the new terminal for customs and border patrol processing for international arrivals. The Tenant Fit Up, valued at $3.5 million, is a build out of each airline’s tenant space, including ticketing offices, ramp service offices, break rooms, locker rooms, maintenance areas, storage rooms and baggage claim service areas. The South Concourse, the largest of the three additional projects, is valued at $99 million and is a mirrored image of the North Concourse.

It is also worth noting that Archer Western previously completed a $103 million parking garage and the $10 million Taxiway J in 2003 for the Authority.

A team approach
At any given time, the terminal construction site may have 450 workers. To manage the project, Archer Western employs a full-time project manager with the support of field superintendents, engineers and related accounting personnel. The management team is stationed full-time at the project site. Regularly scheduled progress meetings are held with all subcontractors at which the owner’s and architect’s attendance is required.

The Walsh Group, headquartered in Chicago, has 12 regional offices throughout the country and provides general contracting, construction management and design-build services. Recognized as one the nation’s top 20 contractors in the Engineering News-Record’s Top 400 Contractors List, The Walsh Group provides services through its subsidiaries Walsh Construction and Archer Western Contractors.

Archer Western Contractors, established in 1983, is based in Atlanta. The company performs work in various building, civil and transportation sectors, including airports, rapid transit, highway and bridgework, educational facilities, warehouse/distribution facilities, athletic facilities, correctional facilities, office, design-build, and wastewater and water treatment plants.

Safety is a priority
Archer Western is known for maintaining a safe work environment. The company won praise from the N.C. Department of Labor in August, when it was recognized for working 1 million hours with no injuries that resulted in days away from work at the RDU site.

Building success
More than a family-owned business, Archer Western nurtures the sense of a family of individuals who live for what they do. Projects are discussed at conference room tables and dinner tables. According to Archer Western Contractors, building success begins by building teams dedicated to working together.
