Connecting in Heathrow

The following information is adapted from a special London Heathrow edition of the Workingtogether newsletter from the Oneworld alliance sales team — March 2008. The article provides valuable information for international travelers connecting through London’s Heathrow Airport.

American’s RDU to London flight arrives in Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 3. Plans call for all Oneworld Alliance airlines to operate from Terminal 3 and Terminal 5. Terminal 3 is also undergoing an upgrade with improved check-in areas and lounges.

Heathrow offers a world of opportunity
to RDU travelers. The airport provides
serveral tips to make connectivity thru
easy and simple.

Connecting to/from T5
If you arrive in Terminal 3 or any terminal other than T5, take the airside transfer coach/bus to T5 and go directly to the Flight Connections Centre. Once your boarding pass has been verified, proceed through security to the gate area. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, a biometric check will be administered prior to going through security.

If you arrive in T5 and are transferring to T3 or any other terminal, follow the purple transfer signs to the airside transfer coaches/buses which operate to the other terminals every 6-8 minutes.

Ready to fly
You must pass through check-in and/or security at T5 and be “ready to fly” at least 35 minutes before your flight departs. If you miss this deadline, you will not be allowed to board your flight and will be rebooked to another flight. Standby at the gate will not
be permitted. “Ready to fly” means having a 2-D bar coded boarding pass, the permitted amount of hand luggage and proper travel documents.

Passport and Visa Check for customers with carry-on luggage only
If you’re flying longhaul from T5 or taking a shorthaul flight to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Prague or Kiev, and you’ve checked in on-line or at a check-in kiosk at the terminal, you will need to go to one of the Passport and Visa Check Desks before going to security. If you have checked luggage, your passport and visa will be checked at a Fast Bag Drop or Customer Service desk.
